Designing Systems to Eliminate the Consequences of Maternal Depression

The following case studies highlight stories of three states that have developed systems for screening for maternal depression and providing appropriate follow-up treatment. Along with providing detailed descriptions of successful state and community systems, the case studies provide insights on:

• Utilizing a quality improvement framework to increase maternal depression identification and treatment
• Leveraging Medicaid to break cycles of poverty and maternal depression
• Developing the relationships and partnerships needed to spread, scale and sustain changes

Thanks to improved systems, more mothers are receiving screens for depression, and more children and families are benefiting from healthier mothers.
