Maternal Mental Health Awareness

Providing families with maternal mental health support

Maternal Mental Health Month is recognized every May. The blue dot is the symbol for perinatal mental health survivorship, support, and solidarity. Perinatal mental health disorders, like postpartum depression and anxiety, are the leading complication of childbirth.

Perinatal Mental Health Resources for ALL Families

Several organizations are working to improve perinatal mental health outcomes for families, including the Blue Dot Project under Postpartum Support International. NICHQ joins in sharing helpful resources for health professionals, community advocates, and families to identify and support mothers and caregivers who may be struggling with their mental health.

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) are a major concern worldwide, impacting 1 in 5 new and expecting parents. Some of these postpartum disorders include depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar, and psychosis. Breaking this number down further, World Maternal Mental Health Day and Postpartum Support International estimate that

  • 1 in 5 women experience a PMAD
  • 7 in 10 women hide or downplay their symptoms
  • 1 in 10 fathers develop depression in the postpartum period
  • 20-25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage or stillbirth
