Improving systems to prevent infant mortality

By empowering parents to prepare for healthy pregnancies that result in healthy children, healthcare professionals can help reduce the disparate rates of infant mortality in the U.S. and improve health outcomes for all babies and families.

Preparation and Prevention

Addressing the Leading Causes of Infant Mortality

Infant mortality is the death of an infant before his or her first birthday. The infant mortality rate (IMR) reflects the health and well-being of a nation. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 20,500 infants died in the United States in 2022. In the U.S., the IMR increased 3.1% from 543.6 infant deaths per 100,000 live births in 2021 to 560.4.

The five leading causes of infant death in 2022 were:

  1. Birth defects.
  2. Preterm birth and low birth weight.
  3. Sudden infant death syndrome.
  4. Unintentional injuries (e.g., car crashes).
  5. Maternal pregnancy complications.

One of the difficulties in addressing this crisis has been the multitude of factors that influence it, including access to appropriate levels of care; maternal health; the social determinants of health, such as income and race, between populations and regions; and pregnancy planning, among others.

NICHQ INitiatives

Our Work to Reduce Infant Mortality

NICHQ’s work includes several project-related initiatives dedicated to to reduce infant mortality and improve infant health outcomes for all.

Supporting Healthy Start Performance Project

Healthy Start is a community-based federal program seeking to eliminate disparities in infant mortality and perinatal outcomes by working to improve systems of community care in communities with infant mortality rates at least 1.5 times the U.S. national average.

Maternal Health Action & Resource Center (MHARC)

The newly established MHARC will provide capacity building assistance (CBA), training, and technical assistance (TTA) to State Maternal Health Innovation awardees and other Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) – Maternal and Child Health Bureau award recipients. This center will broadly share and disseminate information about evidence-based strategies and guidance with the purpose of enhancing and strengthening recipients’ ability to improve maternal health outcomes for all populations in their communities in order to advance maternal health nationally.

Coordinated Systems Are Key to Addressing Rising Preterm Birth Rates

Preterm birth is a leading cause of infant mortality and morbidity in the U.S. And troublingly, recent data show that U.S. preterm birth rates have risen for the fourth consecutive year.
