NICHQ Continues Two-Year Trend of Staff Growth

Seven new staff members added in past two months

As NICHQ’s project list continues to grow, so has its staff list. In the last two months, NICHQ has welcomed seven new employees, bringing the staff to 35 workers strong. This recent growth has followed a two-year trend of significant staff expansion – in 2010 NICHQ operated with a staff of 14, growing to 23 in 2011. At 35 employees and with a consistently growing project list, the expansion is expected to continue. “It is wonderful to see so many new faces at NICHQ,” says Charles Homer, NICHQ CEO. “Our new staff members bring a rich diversity of experience. Our office is bustling with new energy.”

Sources of Growth
In the last two years, NICHQ has been awarded ten new projects. Most of the projects are managed by teams of four to six NICHQ employees; however, three of the largest and most complex projects have larger teams.

  • Collaborate for Healthy Weight is managed by the largest project staff at NICHQ. This project is working with communities across the United States to reverse the obesity epidemic and promote health equity. Phase One of the project launched in September 2011 with ten regional teams. Phase Two, which launches this month, will expand that number by at least 40 teams. As this work progresses, NICHQ will continue to increase its staff to accommodate the project’s large-scale needs.
  • Working to Improve Sickle Cell Healthcare (WISCH) is another large-scale project composed of two connected programs: Sickle Cell Disease Treatment Demonstration Program and Sickle Cell Disease Newborn Screening Program. The programs aim to improve care and outcomes for individuals with sickle cell disease and improve follow-up of those who are detected through newborn screening to have sickle cell disease, sickle cell trait and other hemoglobin disorders.
  • Best Fed Beginnings is NICHQ’s newest project and will be the organization’s largest Collaborative to date. Launching in Spring 2012, the project will work with up to 90 hospitals to help them make changes to maternity care policies and practices to better support mothers to be able to breastfeed their babies and achieve Baby-Friendly status.

Introducing NICHQ’s Newest Employees

Lexi Abel, MPH
Lexi is a Project Manager working with NICHQ’s Obesity National Advisory Council and other obesity programs. She comes to NICHQ with a background in international health.

Tricia Finnerty, MS
Tricia is a Senior Project Manager at NICHQ, working on the Working to Improve Sickle Cell Healthcare (WISCH) and Newborn Hearing Screening projects. Prior to joining NICHQ, Tricia worked with the Tourette Syndrome Association and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Cindy Hannon, MSW
Cindy is a Senior Project Manager focusing on Quality Improvement. Cindy comes to NICHQ with a background in quality improvement and adolescent health promotion and prevention.

Alana Krafchin, MBA
Alana is the Associate Director of Operations focusing on NICHQ’s Business, Operational and Human Strategies. Alana has a background in Healthcare IT and Start-Up Operations.

Carrie Peltier, MS, MPH
Carrie is a Project Manager working on the Collaborate for Healthy Weight and Be Our Voice obesity projects. Carrie has a background working in nutrition research, managing laboratories, and developing and implementing public health initiatives.

Adam Richman
Adam is a Project Coordinator for the Collaborate for Healthy Weight and Best Fed Beginnings projects. Prior to joining NICHQ, he interned at the Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics in Boston and Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut.

Heather Scudellari
Heather is a Project Coordinator for the CHIPRA Massachusetts Medical Home Initiative and Collaborate for Healthy Weight. Prior to joining NICHQ, she was an Associate Producer at Powderhouse Productions where she worked on Animal Planet programming.
