Providing Discharge Support
The Texas Ten Step Star Achiever Breastfeeding Learning Collaborative is a quality improvement initiative to help Texas hospitals create environments in which women’s choices concerning breastfeeding can best be supported, with the goal of increasing exclusive breastfeeding in the immediate postpartum period and continuing through six months of age. The project consists of up to 81 teams of Texas-based hospitals broken into three geographically-based cohorts.
Data from a cohort of 20 teams shows a steady increase from 49 percent of hospitals to 73 percent of hospitals providing discharge support to mothers. That is two adjusted medians in 18 months!
That means 11,520 more mothers each year are getting the support they need at hospital discharge to continue breastfeeding at home.
