WHAT: A project to develop guidelines for treatment of three clinical issues (gastrointestinal disorders, sleep and neurology) related to autism spectrum disorders, as well as the development of toolkits to aid in implementation.

WHO: The project involved healthcare teams from Autism Treatment Network sites across the country.

WHEN: September 2008 to August 2011

FUNDER: The project was a consortium agreement with Massachusetts General Hospital, which was funded by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The work was conducted in partnership with Autism Speaks.

NICHQ'S ROLE: Provided expertise in refining the process of guideline development.

This project led to NICHQ's involvement in the Collaborative to Improve Care for Children with Autism.

Several tools for primary care clinicians were developed, tested and finalized as part of the Autism Intervention Research Network project.
